SOLD!!! Gerald Anderson F5 (SN52) SOLD!!!
I owned a Summit F100s for about 4 years and it was an excellent mandolin. However, I never really got comfortable with the neck and had the hankering for a wider neck, just like I prefer on guitars. At MerleFest '99, I found this mandolin and immediately felt comfortable with it. Played it for 2 days waiting for someone else to come along and get it. No one did, so I grabbed it and am really glad I did. The top is red spruce, the neck measures 1.220" at the nut, and it's just a great playing instrument.
I've never met Gerald (want to, though) but I understand that he works in Wayne Henderson's shop. The workmanship on this mandolin is good- not outstanding in the fine details, but good where it counts. And the neck...did I mention that I love it?
The fretboard is scooped out, something that I really like since it prevents "pick-click" and I can't play up there anyway. I re-fretted the mando recently, using banjo fretwire and a 12" radius. If you look closely, you'll see that the frets higher than the 13th are done with a narrower wire. This is a trick I use on mandolins and electric guitars- it gives you more finger room on the higher, closer spaced frets.
Here's a look at the back and neck joint
The headstock's got just enough inlay to dress it up without driving the price up!
